KEF R3 bookshelf speaker. Performance on a standmount is redefined by R3. It makes sense because it uses the same drivers as the top-of-the-line R11. The 165mm (6.5 in.) bass driver, a real three-way speaker, pushes bass performance to new heights. The Uni-Q array, which is made up of a 25mm (1 in.) aluminum dome tweeter and a 125mm (5 in.) midrange driver, defies expectations for the smallest main speaker in the lineup. However, KEF Speakers engineers have lessened the influence of these required gaps by opening a chamber beneath the drivers and adding resonance-absorbing dampening material for a more precise, purer treble. Tiny resonances are caused by air moving through the tiny gaps between Uni-individual Q’s parts.
Dedicated low-frequency drivers from the KEF R Series have a two-part design with a paper cone on top of a shallow concave aluminium shell. This increases rigidity while the distinctive form of the cone lowers resonances and provides the pistonic action that gives these drivers their exceptional timing ability. The new drivers also have a fully revamped spider design that lessens harmonic distortion for a cleaner, more precise sound, as well as a magnet system that produces a more equal magnetic field.
